I was wondering if after all these years you’d like to meet? Hello is one of my favorite songs by the artist Adele. The lyrics capture my emotions when I travel to Berlin every summer. After a long time living abroad and visiting Berlin only once or twice a year, it is hard to stay in touch with my friends. Lucky me though, whenever I call them, even when years have passed, they still make time to see me. It always seems like our last conversation was only yesterday. Every year, I experience a different Berlin, with new buildings, clubs and restaurants. I love to cycle around the city with my children and show them where I grew up. They love to listen to the stories from the past. I fall in love at least twice a day with this unique city that has a special vibe, especially during the summer. But sometimes, particularly when it comes to flea markets, street festivals and other places of interest, I often miss my old Berlin not flooded with thousands of people. The city also has great cultural events and festivals to offer. You can read the announcements and dates in the Feuil-leton section | upper left | of the daily newspaper Tagesspiegel. It is the newspaper my father read every morning at the kitchen table when I was a child. He still reads it every day. One of my favorite festivals is the Festival of Lights, which takes place once a year in autumn→Festival of Lights, p. 118 – 127. Benjamin and I got married three weeks after he proposed on my 30th birthday in June 2011. I was already pregnant with Maximilian and we were plan-ning to move to India. Everything is much easier when you enter India as a married couple. We had a wonderful private wedding only with the members of our family | center, bottom | This art piece also shows two of my favorite sightsee-ing objects, the Victory Column with my Guardian Angel and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. For me, these two memorials have been closely con-nected since December 2016. As a child, when I still believed in Santa Claus, I always imagined the angel of the Victory Column to be my personal guardian angel watching over me. As for the church, sadly it got worldwide attention when a terrorist hijacked a truck and drove the vehicle through the Christmas market around it, killing twelve and injuring more than 70 people. That evening changed my life.Benjamin and I were planning our move from India to Japan, and we visited my parents at Christ-mas 2016. We bought new furniture and prepared everything for our next adventure. Our children had severe jetlag and didn’t like going to bed before 10 o’clock. I suggested to my parents that they might take the kids to the Christmas market at the Memo-rial Church. We still had tokens from last year for the kids’ rides. I saw the news when they came home and was shocked. My parents had changed their plans at the last minute and had gone to another Christ-mas market instead. I don’t know what would have happened if they hadn’t. I am thankful that nothing happened to my family and feel deep sympathy for those who lost someone. My Guardian Angel was real that night.
